Well it seems those pesky scientists have been at it again answering all those really important questions we desperately need answering. This time it’s our friends the BBC reporting the most urgent breaking news: How did a Smilodon Sebretooth cat close its mouth?
Personally I have been pondering this very question since I got my first ever dinosaur book at the tender age of five. “Wow!” I would say to my Dad, “how did that cat close its mouth with those big teeth, surely it would bite itself? Imagine if it bit its tongue!” usually followed by me doing a highly convincing impersonation of a sabretooth that had bitten its tongue, “mhhhfff hmmm mufff”.

Now the new analysis reveals that the cats’ jaw muscles evolved into a specialised pattern, which allowed them to open their mouths so wide.

Haha brilliant but I can’t see this technology catching on. Sometimes it’s good to approach a problem from the opposite angle, sometimes it isn’t, this is the latter. I couldn’t stop laughing until I fell off my chair and hurt myself though.

Thanks to Gizmodo for the heads up.

Now I’m one of those people who despises those nasty low energy eco bulbs we have all been forced to use by overbearing nanny EU regulation. Yes, its true I love the old incandescent bulbs and their instant on and instantly bright dark busting brilliance. Those horrid eco ones are pale wimpy shadows that last no longer than incandescent and funnily enough cost five times more and are full of the nastiest chemicals you could put in your home.

During its use as a heater, HEATBALLS have an unavoidable emission of light in the visible spectrum. This light is harmless and can not be used as a reason for reclamation.

One enterprising German has come up with the perfect solution, Heatballs! They aren’t incandescent light bulbs of course, no, they are mini heaters that just happen to conveniently fit into your existing light sockets. The beauty of this is that incandescent bulbs are indeed very efficient heaters, converting 95% of the energy they draw into heat and there is an argument that replacing your bulbs with eco bulbs will just mean your heating has to work harder to compensate and unfortunately its no where near as efficient as an incandescent so you are actually harming the planet more.

Stop harming our planet and buy lots of Heatballs this winter! Head on over to the Heatball web site and buy some now… well thats if you can catch some stock, they seem to be quite popular.

Heatball is free from mercury, independent from lobbyists, and a symbol of free mind

You have got to love the human race, what ingenuity.

And that’s not to mention all the products made from pigs like Glycerin used in jelly and sweets or cochineal used in red food colouring and the thousands of other products we just don’t realize are animal based. Ironic isn’t it…? ;) Now go out there and eat meat, you know you want to really.

Absolutely hilarious advert is utterly brilliant and had me in stitches, which probably wasn’t the intended effect. It was produced for Sony and Kyocera to highlight climate change but for obvious reasons it didn’t go down too well. Personally I can think of a few uses for a button like that and if climate change keeps churning out brilliant material like this then please don’t stop it ;)

Insane stunt

By Ian Wilson

I’m just lost for words with this clip. Well ok maybe not exactly :) There is so much to be said in favor of CGI but as usual this clip proves that doing it for real just can’t be beaten.  I don’t have any information on the stunt man or the film this was shot for so if anyone figures it out please post a comment to let me know. This stunt man has quite some balls, that was one hell of a long drop!

Many thanks to Gizmodo for the heads up.

Alice in Wonderland

By Ian Wilson

Tumble down the rabbit hole with Alice for a fantastical adventure from Walt Disney Pictures and Tim Burton. Inviting and magical, Alice In Wonderland is an imaginative new twist on one of the most beloved stories of all time. Alice (Mia Wasikowska), now 19 years old returns to the whimsical world she first entered as a child and embarks on a journey to discover her true destiny

I really wasn’t sure about this film. Tim Burton has produced some fantastic and dark works and of course Mr Depp is never better than when he’s playing a completely bonkers character. But still and in spite of this films PG rating I wasn’t sure the kids would be able to sit through it without running out crying at some point. I decided to let them watch it anyway, and had a secret bet all to myself on how long it would be before each of my boys decided they had had enough ;)

To my surprise not only did they both sit enthralled through the whole film, they even loved watching the frightful Jabberwocky get decapitated. Chips of the old block those boys. I must also admit to loving the film. Mia is charming and ballsy and Depp is… well he’s Depp as we have come to know him and brilliant as usual. Actually my wife remarked recently that she doesn’t have a clue what Depp looks like in real life any more, perhaps he doesn’t do real life these days.

Some of the scenes are a little brutal and an odd word or two may make the more sensitive parent flinch but let’s be honest, everyone knows Burton and his style these days and this is one of the least dark films he’s done in a very long time so sit back relax and sink into Wonderland one more time.
